Counterparty Verification Service: Vet a Partner Fast

"Counterparty verification" sounds like bank jargon. In practice it answers one plain question fast: is this the person or company they claim to be?

"Counterparty" is a term borrowed from banking, but the question it describes is one every business runs into: before you sign, pay, or partner, is the other side actually who they say they are?

What a counterparty verification service actually checks

A proper service verifies four things, in this order:

  1. Identity — is the entity registered where it claims, or is the individual real and using their actual name and credentials?
  2. Control — who actually owns or directs the entity, since a name on a letterhead isn't necessarily who you're dealing with?
  3. Exposure — does the entity or anyone connected to it appear on a sanctions list, in offshore leak data, or in adverse media?
  4. History — litigation, prior similar pitches to other counterparties, and a digital footprint consistent with what's being claimed.

This is a narrower, faster problem than full financial due diligence (see our breakdown of what due diligence actually costs for that distinction), which is why it can be done in days rather than weeks.

How fast is fast

Automated screening against global sanctions lists, offshore ownership databases, and public registries runs in minutes once you have the subject's name and at least one hard identifier, a registration number, date of birth, or nationality. What takes a day or two is human review: resolving ambiguous name matches, checking claimed track record against independent sources, and writing a plain-English verdict rather than handing back a raw data dump.

When you actually need this

  • A new vendor or supplier asking for a deposit before you've worked together
  • An investor proposing to fund your business, especially one who wants to move quickly
  • A partner in a joint venture, particularly across borders
  • Anyone approaching a government agency with a financing or infrastructure proposal, see our guide for governments evaluating a foreign investor pitch

What you get back

A usable report has a verdict on page one, not buried after twenty pages of raw findings: an overall risk rating, the specific findings that drove it, and a source log so you can check anything yourself. See an actual sample report to see what this looks like before you order one.

Scrutinex runs this exact process, entity, individual, or both, for a fixed price with no retainer. Start a report when you have a name and an identifier, or subscribe to our occasional notes on due diligence patterns if you're not ready to order yet.
