How to Verify a Company in Liberia Before You Do Business

Verifying a Liberian counterparty requires knowing which register the entity actually sits in, because Liberia operates two very different systems and they answer different questions.

The domestic registry

Businesses trading in Liberia register with the Liberia Business Registry, which operates as a one-stop registration facility under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Ministry sets out the requirement and the process on its business procedures and processes page, and the National Investment Commission summarises the registration route for investors on its starting a business page.

The practical point for a buyer: there is no free, public, online search of the domestic register that returns full company records. Verification generally means requesting confirmation or a certified extract through the registry, which in practice usually requires a request in Monrovia or an agent acting locally. Plan the timeline accordingly rather than assuming an instant lookup.

The international registry is a separate thing entirely

Liberia also hosts a long-established international corporate registry, administered by the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry, described on its corporate registry pages. Entities formed there are non-resident international companies, and the register also covers the Liberian ship registry, one of the largest in the world.

An entity "registered in Liberia" may therefore be an international company with no Liberian operations, no Liberian staff and no Liberian assets. That is lawful and common. It is also not evidence of a Liberian business presence, and pitches sometimes rely on the ambiguity.

What to ask the counterparty for

• The exact registered name and registration number, and a statement of which register it sits in.
• A current business registration certificate, together with permission to confirm it at source.
• The Tax Identification Number and evidence of current tax standing with the Liberia Revenue Authority.
• Sector licences where the activity is regulated: mining, petroleum, forestry, banking, insurance, telecoms and shipping each involve a separate regulator.
• The names and nationalities of the directors and the beneficial owners.

What registry confirmation does not tell you

Registration establishes existence and legal form. It does not establish that the entity trades, that it holds the concession or licence it claims, that it can finance a project, or that its stated owners are the real ones. Confirm licences with the sector regulator, confirm claimed contracts with the counterparty to those contracts, and screen the individuals behind the company against the official sanctions lists using the method in how to check if you are on a sanctions list.
